Senior Portrait Photography: The Complete Guide to Pricing, Posing, and Booking
Senior portrait season is the most predictable revenue cycle in portrait photography. Every spring and summer, a new class of high school seniors needs photos. The demand is guaranteed. The only question is whether they book you or someone else.
This guide covers everything you need to build a profitable senior portrait business: pricing that reflects your value, posing techniques that work for teenagers (who are often the hardest subjects to direct), the booking timeline that gets you first pick of clients, and marketing strategies that fill your calendar.
The Senior Portrait Timeline
January-March: Marketing launch. Showcase previous year's work. Open booking for the upcoming class.
April-May: Early bird bookings. Offer a small incentive for booking before summer. This locks in your calendar before the rush.
June-August: Peak shooting season. Most seniors want outdoor sessions with good weather and green foliage.
September-October: Fall sessions for the seniors who want autumn colors. Also a second chance to capture clients who missed summer.
November-December: Gallery delivery and print orders. This is also when senior ``rep' or ``model' campaigns for the next year begin.
Pricing Senior Portraits
Session-only pricing: $200-$500 for a 1-hour session including 20-40 edited images. This is the entry point for price-sensitive markets.
Collection-based pricing: $400-$1,200 for session + print/product packages. Collections that include an album, prints, or a grad announcement set convert at higher values.
The model/rep program: Offer 2-3 seniors per school a discounted or complimentary session in exchange for social media promotion and referrals. The rep program is your highest-ROI marketing channel for senior portraits.
Posing Teenagers
Teenagers are self-conscious, easily bored, and hyper-aware of how they look. Traditional portrait posing doesn't work.
Keep it moving. Walk-and-talk sequences, leaning against walls, sitting on steps. Static poses feel forced to teens — movement feels natural.
Let them use their phone. Ask them to text someone, scroll through something. The "looking at phone" pose produces natural, relaxed expressions. Then have them look up.
Play music. Ask them what they want to listen to. Music changes body language immediately. A teenager listening to their favorite song relaxes in ways no amount of direction can achieve.
Marketing to Seniors (and Their Parents)
You're selling to two audiences simultaneously: the teenager who wants to look good, and the parent who's paying for it.
Instagram and TikTok reach the seniors. Behind-the-scenes reels, before/after editing videos, and styled session previews build demand with the right audience.
Facebook and email reach the parents. Testimonials from other parents, gallery previews, and "last spots available" urgency campaigns drive booking decisions.
