Moab Elopement Photography: Locations, Permits, and Planning
Moab has become one of the most sought-after elopement destinations in the American West. The red rock formations, the endless desert vistas, and the dramatic light create a backdrop that no indoor venue can compete with.
But shooting elopements in Moab requires specific knowledge that wedding photographers from other regions don't have: permit requirements that vary by land management agency, seasonal weather challenges that can shut down a shoot, and logistical planning for locations that are hours from the nearest town.
Best Locations for Moab Elopements
Arches National Park
The iconic destination. Delicate Arch, the Windows, and Double Arch are the most requested backdrops. However, Arches requires a photography permit for commercial work, and the most popular formations are heavily trafficked during peak season.
Best spots: Delicate Arch viewpoint at sunset (arrive early), the Windows at sunrise (fewer crowds), and the La Sal Mountains viewpoint from the road.
Permit required: Yes. Commercial photography permits through the National Park Service. Apply at least 2-4 weeks in advance.
Dead Horse Point State Park
The overlook at Dead Horse Point is arguably the most dramatic single viewpoint in all of Moab. The Colorado River bends 2,000 feet below, surrounded by red and white rock layers. It's equally stunning but less crowded than Arches.
Permit required: Yes, for commercial photography. Apply through Utah State Parks.
Fisher Towers
Fisher Towers is the location for couples who want the dramatic red rock landscape without the crowds. The towering sandstone spires create a Mars-like atmosphere. The trailhead is about 30 minutes from Moab.
Permit required: BLM (Bureau of Land Management) permit for commercial photography.
BLM Land (Bureau of Land Management)
The vast majority of land surrounding Moab is BLM-managed. This gives you access to hundreds of square miles of photogenic desert landscape with minimal permitting hassle. BLM land is where most elopement photographers find their "secret spots."
Permit required: Special Recreation Permits for commercial use. Easier and faster to obtain than National Park permits.
Seasonal Planning
Spring (March-May): Best season. Wildflowers in late March through April, comfortable temperatures (60-80F daytime), and the best golden hour light.
Summer (June-August): Extreme heat. Temperatures regularly exceed 105F. If you must shoot in summer, schedule sessions within 2 hours of sunrise or sunset. Midday shoots are dangerous.
Fall (September-November): Second-best season. Cottonwood trees along the Colorado River turn golden in October, adding warm contrast to the red rock landscape. Temperatures moderate to 70-85F.
Winter (December-February): Cold (20-50F daytime) but dramatic. Snow-dusted red rocks create a surreal landscape that very few photographers capture. Shorter days mean compressed golden hour windows.
Logistical Considerations
Moab is remote. The nearest major airport is Grand Junction, CO (110 miles) or Salt Lake City (230 miles). Planning for travel logistics is essential.
Cell service is limited. Many of the best elopement locations have no cell service. Download offline maps, communicate a detailed timeline in advance, and carry a satellite communicator for emergencies.
Physical demands. Many locations require hiking — some moderate, some strenuous. Communicate physical requirements to couples during planning and ensure they're prepared.
